Historical animation - Fulling bee

Wednesday, 1 August 2018, 11 h 30

The sheep’s wool has been carded, spun, washed, and woven; the piece of homespun fabric must now undergo one last step before it can be used to make articles of clothing or bed covers. In order to tighten the thread, it will be vigorously stirred in soapy water until it has shrunk by a finger’s length. The long clubs will be handled by the men; the women will be on hand to supervise operations; where fabric is concerned, women are the experts. The fulling bee is a merry chore; the beating is done to the rhythm of a song and after the work is done everyone knows that there will be tea and sweets for everyone.
