The storyteller was always a welcome visitor, livening up long evenings in the kitchen after the day’s work was done. His visits were rare and all the more appreciated. Neighbors and friends gathered to hear his spiel. Sometimes, resorting to suspense (before the word became common usage), he would interrupt his tale after an hour or two, using the late hour as a pretext, and invite his audience to come back for the sequel on the next day. To accommodate modern times, our storyteller will use no such subtlety; his story will last at most ten or twelve minutes!
