With the onset of rapid changes in the Acadian way of life in the early 20th century, the population was caught off guard. The economy of yesteryear gave way to one requiring capital that local English-speaking entrepreneurs simply didn’t have. This situation prompted various currents of thought, including that of the cooperative movement.
The first Caisse populaire acadienne was opened in Petit-Rocher in 1936, and the first building was constructed in 1944. At the time, caisses were rarely open, often only after Sunday mass.
