July 28 was officially declared the Day of Commemoration of the Acadian Deportation by Royal Proclamation of the Government of Canada in 2003.

The international commemoration project of the Great Upheaval aims to tangibly and permanently highlight the Odyssey of the Acadian people in Canada, across North America, and around the world. This project is part of the commemorative efforts surrounding the 250th anniversary of the Acadian Deportation, which took place in 2005.
