This building is a faithful reproduction of the general store owned by Nicholas D. Thériault in 1924, located at the corner of routes 135 and 325 in Trudel, New Brunswick.
Born in 1885, Nicholas took over management of the store built in 1903 by his father, Dominique Thériault, in 1909, and purchased it three years later.
In 1914, Nicholas began to expand his business. He had a warehouse built, attached to the rear of the store, to store bulk goods. Perishables were stored in the store’s cellar, while furniture, beds, mattresses and even coffins were stored on the upper floor. In 1917, Nicholas installed a gasoline pump and built a small oil shed next to the store.
In 1924, Nicholas undertook major renovations. The storefront was fitted with large windows, a new entrance and panels to give it a square shape. The building was then painted inside and out. However, the panels added during the renovations have to be removed the following year, as they shake the entire facade in high winds.
The Village historique acadien has decided to interpret the Nicholas D. Thériault General Store as it was after the renovations, but before the façade panels were removed. The store is operational, and visitors can purchase merchandise just as they did in the old days.
Today, the original building is an apartment building, still located at the corner of routes 135 and 325 in Trudel.
